OSM goes to Summer Camp in Delhi
On August 7, 2012 OSM will travel to India in collaboration with L.I.B. International to run a sock monkey workshop for young women in a sewing centre in the slums of Delhi. They will be taught to make sock monkeys and other animals based on the same pattern. It’s our hope that this program will eventually turn from an educational exercise to an income generated co-op program. The co-op program will take the finished sock monkeys to market in Delhi; all profits made will go back into the program for supplies to increase stock and eventually an income for the artisans. The L.I.B. sewing centre provides them with a skill to enter the workforce with and the partnership with OSM will help to build curriculum.
Canadian sock manufacturer McGregor has generously agreed to supply socks for the mission, and over 100 sock monkey delegates will accompany L.I.B volunteers, to be distributed to primary school children participating in the Bal Shiksha Kendra Shanti camp, co- presented by L.I.B. International and Concern for Humanity. These delegates have been created and donated by school and community groups from Vancouver, Calgary , Ottawa and Toronto. Many thanks to L.I.B International, Concern for Humanity, McGregor Socks and all OSM Operatives who have contributed to OSM in the past year. Your craftivism and generosity have made this possible and will help to send smiles across the miles!
