Mpumalanga, Where the sun rises

Clowns at work

Clowns at work

Currently on Expedition in Mpumalanga, the clowns are performing  to crowds of 800 -1000 kids, most days giving two shows a day under the blazing South African sun. Alice reports that sometimes her ears ring with the sheer volume of the laughter. After performing, they give circus skills workshops where future clowns are taught to juggle, unicycle and  do acrobatics. For a few hours these children are encouraged to play, sing, dance, laugh. For many of them it’s a welcome relief from the hardship that awaits them at home, caring for ill relatives or facing the responsibility of caring for younger siblings if they have been orphaned.

Read Alice’s weekly journal blog here for amazing accounts of adventures in clowning.
