Summer fun @ Shanti Camp

How did you spend your summer vacation? OSM went to summer camp in India for the month of August!  Working with Indian-based NGO Concern for Humanity and their Canadian partner L.I.B. International, we ran a day camp for children ages 6-12. The goal of the camp was  to provide educational enrichment for school children with a focus on developing English language skills and demonstrating the educational value of creative arts. During the 5-day camp, and in collaboration with L.I.B.International’s  Shoebox of Dreams project, Operation Sock Monkey distributed over 100 sock monkeys to 3 different Learning Centres in the village of Shanti Camp in the rural slum area of New Delhi.

The day camp program focused on enhancing the educational experience through creativity. By teaching students and staff simple games such as ‘Head & Shoulders, Knees & Toes, ‘Itsy-Bitsy Spider’ and other arts, crafts and storytelling activities, we increased the kids confidence and creativity while expanding their knowledge of English language. In return, we learned so much from the students and staff of Bal Shiksha Kendra Centre and were warmly welcomed into their community and invited to participate in the rich & varied culture of their village.

Thanks to all of the sock monkey sponsors, volunteers and Operatives who helped to make this a success- your love and craftivism were truly felt in the community of Shanti Camp New Delhi.  Namaste
